Olarikkara Sree Bhagavathi Temple

OLARIKKARA BHAGAVATHY TEMPLE
The Olarikkara Bhagavathy temple is one of the ancient Hindu temples located in the
village of Olari in the Thrissur district of Kerala. The Major deity of Olarikkara temple is
the goddess Bhagavathy known as Olarikkara Bhagavathy.
Kshetrapalan and Kandan are the two upadevatas worshipped in the Olarikkara temple.
A separate grove is dedicated to the upadevatha, Kandan. The goddess Bhagavthy
faces east, and the kshetrapalan (temple guardian) faces west.
It is believed that the temple is almost 100 years old. Based on the myth there was one
Brahmin family who worshipped Vanadurga at their house. During that time the place
was known as ”Ola irikkum kara” which means the place where the Brahmins reside.
Gradually the name turned to olarikkara.

Kandankkavu Vela is considered the major festival of Olarikkara temple and it is
primarily dedicated to the kandan, one among the upadevathas. It is believed that
offering oil lamps to the kandan, former manthrika brings prosperity to their lives, and
offering kalasam is considered the primary ritual of this kandankkavu vela.
Temple Timings
The temple is open for its devotees every day from morning 5.00 am to 11.00 am and 5.00
pm to 8.00 pm for evening visits. The temple is located about 4km away from Thrissur
town and it is easily accessible for the devotees to visit
